Heritage Day — What We Share

Heritage Day — What We Share
Heritage Day — What We Share

Heritage is not something that belongs to one group, one language, one culture or one tradition. It belongs to all of us.

Today, as South Africans celebrate Heritage Day, we are reminded of the many different stories, traditions and experiences that make up the place we call home. Our heritage is found in our languages, our music, our food, our faith, our history, our families and the places that have shaped us.

And yes — for many South Africans, it is also found around a fire, with friends and family, sharing a braai.

Some people have questioned the idea of calling Heritage Day “National Braai Day”. But perhaps we should not see the braai as something that diminishes our heritage. For millions of South Africans, gathering around a fire, sharing food and conversation is itself part of the way we celebrate community.

The beauty of South Africa is that my heritage does not have to compete with yours.

We can celebrate what makes us different while appreciating what brings us together.

That is also the kind of community I believe Ward 18 should be — a place where every resident, regardless of background, income or circumstance, is treated with dignity and respect.

So today, celebrate your heritage. Tell your children the stories. Share your food. Listen to someone else's story. Invite someone to the fire.

Because heritage is not only about where we came from.

It is also about what we choose to carry forward.

Our heritage. Our community. Our future.
